Great Falls Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
What is a natural deterrent for opossums?
Opossums steal pet food and chew everything they find; it is very important to get rid of opossums as soon as possible because they can cause a disease named Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis. They also do property damage, making holes, chewing everything, and making your yard dirty.
Here are a few ways that can be helpful to deter opossums
Cleaning the location
Remove all unnecessary litter and garbage. All the junk like dead leaves trimmed parts of plants, and dropped trees should be kept in covered trash bins. Clean barbecue grill and cover the pet foods. Clean your yard by picking all dropped fruits and places it in trash bins.
Mothballs
The smell of moth is unbearable for opossums, and it annoys them. This is the cheapest way to eliminate the opossums from your property. Mothballs can prevent opossums from eating any kind of fabric, put mothballs under sofa and porch.
Cover the vents
Opossums can easily enter form chimneys, holes, and lose ventilators. Cover all the openings of your house. For blocking holes, you can use rocks. All open places should be sealed, and you can also use a 4-inch long fence or electric fencing.
Cut down long branches of trees
Remove all favorable places for opossums by cutting tree branches and by trimming the bushes. Examine your rooftop and doorway properly; mend all the cracked tubes and pipes, etc.
Use Ammonia
The horrible smell of ammonia can be an efficient way to remove opossums. You should strategically use the scent of ammonia in a different part of the house, garden, and at the possible entry point of opossums. The smell of ammonia makes opossums obnoxious.
Scare Tactics
Opossums are night-time animals, and they don’t like lights. We can use motion-activated lights and sprinkles. Whenever opossums try to enter into your property motion, activated lights or motion-activated sprinkles will make them scared.
Sonic Repellents
You can place sonic repellents in your ground or near your home. They will emit a high-frequency noise or vibration, and opossums will run away. Usually, sonic repellents do have motion sensors installed. This method is good to use if you have pets cat or dog, high-frequency noise can also make them scared.
Pet Fur
The smell of cats and dogs can keep opossums away from your property, as they don’t like predators. Every time you brush your pet, collect their hairs, and spread them in different parts of your home. After smelling, predator opossums will run away.
Spicy Spray
Make a spicy spray by adding crushed pepper and dishwashing soap into the water. Spray this spry on your vegetable plants, around your garden, and nearby places, and they will avid both the smell and taste of this spray.
Garlic
Garlic acts same like spicy spray, spread crushed cloves of garlic around your garden or mince them and add hot water to create spray. This method will only work on a hard surface, and this very safe for your pets too.
